Why Your Magnetic Screen Door Won't Close in the Middle (and How to Fix the Center Gap)

You walk through, the two panels are supposed to snap shut behind you — but there's a gap down the middle, and the bugs have found it. A center gap is one of the most common complaints with magnetic screen doors. Here's what causes it, and how to get the panels meeting cleanly again.

Why the center won't seal

• Too few magnets. Cheaper doors use a handful of spaced-out magnet blocks. There's nothing pulling the gap shut between those blocks, so it gapes. A full-length magnetic strip closes along the whole seam.
• Not enough tension. If the panels are hung loose, they sway instead of springing back to center.
• Wrong size. A curtain much wider than the doorway bunches up, and the extra fabric stops the edges from lining up.
• It's drifting sideways. On a steel or metal frame, the magnets can pull toward the edge instead of the middle — a different problem with its own fix.

The fixes that work

1. Add horizontal tension. Hang the top-center about 1–2 cm higher than the sides and pull the panels taut across. Gravity and tension then drag the magnets back to the center every time someone passes.
2. Weight the bottom. Sew or clip a little extra weight along the bottom hem — fishing weights, steel washers, or a sewn-in chain. The panels hang straight and meet faster, and they stop fluttering in a breeze.
3. Check your magnet coverage. If you're shopping, choose a door with continuous magnets from top to bottom, not a few spaced blocks. It's the single biggest difference between a door that seals and one that doesn't.
4. Get the size right. Measure your doorway (width and height, excluding the frame) and match it — a snug fit closes far better than an oversized one.

When it's the door, not the install

Sometimes no amount of adjusting helps because the door itself is the problem — thin polyester that sags, or just too few magnets. If you've re-hung it, added weight, and it still won't close, that's the door telling you to upgrade.
