Thermal Door Curtain vs Plastic Strip Curtain: Which Keeps a House Warmer?

For a house, a quilted thermal door curtain keeps more heat in than a plastic strip curtain, and it does it without looking like a loading dock. PVC strip curtains were designed for warehouses and walk-in freezers, where forklifts push through all day. They stop some air movement, but the strips do not insulate and never fully seal. An insulated magnetic curtain does both: it blocks the draft and adds a layer of still air in front of the door.

Side by side

Thermal door curtain Plastic strip curtain
Draft blocking Full seal: one panel, magnetic center seam closes itself Partial: strips overlap but gap at every edge, and they sway open in wind
Insulation Quilted Oxford fabric with polyester fill traps a still-air layer None; thin PVC conducts cold straight through
Walking through Push the seam, it closes behind you Strips slap against you and stay parted for a moment
Pets Dogs and cats push the seam and it reseals Strips work too, but leave a gap every time
Looks Fabric panel, reads as a curtain Reads as a warehouse
Light Solid version blocks light; clear-window version keeps it Clear, but yellows and scratches over time
Install Hook-and-loop strip plus tacks, no rail, no drilling required Usually a metal mounting rail screwed to the header
Cleaning Wipe with a damp cloth (not machine washable) Wipe
Best at Entry, patio, garage-to-house and mudroom doors Freezers, loading bays, forklift traffic

Where strips still make sense

  • Carrying wide things through all day. If you are wheeling a mower or a bike through a doorway ten times an hour, strips tolerate that abuse and a fabric curtain will get pulled off its tape.
  • Cold rooms. Strips are built for a freezer door, where the goal is separating two cold zones, not keeping a living room warm.
  • Very wide industrial openings. Beyond a two-car garage width, strips scale up more easily.

Where a thermal curtain wins

  • The door you feel cold standing next to. That is a draft, and a sealed magnetic seam stops it completely where strips only slow it down.
  • Doors people and pets use normally. A curtain that closes itself behind a dog is the whole point.
  • Anything visible from the living room. Nobody wants strips on the kitchen door.

Honest limits

A thermal door curtain is not a replacement for a broken door seal or an uninsulated wall. It fixes the doorway. If a room is cold everywhere, start with the door, then look at windows and weatherstripping. And on the 16-foot garage version, check that the heavy panels have lined up on the magnets after you walk through.

Sizes

Fillis thermal curtains fit standard doors from 32 x 80 to 48 x 80 inches in solid and clear-window versions, 72-inch wide for double and sliding doors, and a 16 x 7 ft garage door curtain for a two-car garage.

FAQ

Can I hang a thermal curtain where a strip curtain was? Yes, if the header is flat. Remove the rail, clean the surface, and the hook-and-loop strip goes on the same spot.

Is a thermal curtain soundproof? It dampens noise a little because it is a padded panel, but it is not a soundproofing product.
